Benin - An Introduction

The Republic of Benin is a country in Western Africa. Till 1975, it was called Dahomania or Dahomey. Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Niger are its neighbors. The capital of Benin is Porto Novo, but the government machinery runs from Cotonou. Benin is a democratic republic; President Of Benin is head of the government and head of the state. The Benin government is multiparty.

Benin’s natural geography is stretched between Niger River in the northeast and Bright of Benin in the south. Benin has long coastal strips and forested plateaus. The northern part of country consists of Savanna and Semi Arid highlands. Queme River flows southward through mid of the country. Benin receives less rain in comparison to other West African countries. Rainfall occurs mainly between April to July and September to November.

The Benin’s economy largely depends on agriculture and agriculture based products. Cotton makes to 40% of total GDP. Beans, Corn, cashews, cassava, rice, peanuts, pineapples, yams, and other various tubers, fishes and shrimps provides local subsistence. Benin started production of offshore oil in 1982, but production ceased later. However, hunt for the new production sites are continuous. Now the commercial activities in Benin are getting privatized. Small businesses are owned by Benin’s people. Benin’s government is working hard to make Benin financially independent nation; definitely its’ economy is strengthening but still not at good pace. Other governments, World Bank and agencies like International Monetary Fund are working hard in support with government and industry to make Benin a developed nation.
